Sopheap Pich
1971年バッタンバン出身、プノンペン在住。1999年シカゴ美術館附属美術大学ペインティング専攻を修了。主な展覧会に2013年NYメトロポリタン美術館での個展や、2017年第57回ヴェネチア・ビエンナーレ国際美術展「VIVA ARTE VIVA」など、ソプアップ・ピッチは世界的に活躍するアーティストです。
本作は、一片の竹の端材の片側にインクを浸し、それを何度も紙に押し当てて制作されたものです。インクは酸化鉄を主な原料としており、竹とともに、自然界にあり、誰もが容易く入手できるものを素材としています。慣例的な絵画ー特別な修練を積んだ画家が特殊なイメージを提供するーからもっとも隔たった地点にある平面作品と言えるかもしれません。自然で、即物的で、制作手法が明示されているがゆえに、絵画は開放性とリズムを獲得しています。それは極めてシンプルな視覚的な歓びが再起動する機会を私たちに提供しているかのようです。
Born in Battambang in 1971,lives and works in Phnom Penh, Sopheap Pich completed MFA in painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. Sopheap is an internationally acclaimed artist whose major exhibitions include a solo show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York in 2013 and the 57th Venice Biennale international exhibition "VIVA ARTE VIVA" in 2017.
This work was created by dipping one side of a piece of bamboo scrap wood in ink and pressing it repeatedly onto paper. The ink is made primarily from iron oxide, a material that, along with bamboo, is found in nature and readily available to all. It is perhaps the most distant plane from conventional painting, in which a specially trained artist offers a particular image. Because it is natural, immediate, and explicit in its production technique, the painting achieves an extreme openness and rhythm.It offers us the opportunity to reactivate a profoundly simple visual pleasure.

World Art Osaka2023年に ソピアプ・ピッチ氏を紹介することが出来、大変光栄に思います。 ピッチの作品は、2013年のメトロポリタン美術館での個展やドクメンタ13などを、2年間にわたって多くの国際的な美術館で展示されてきました。2017年にはヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレ、ビバ・アルテ・ビバ、東京の森美術館で開催された「サンシャワー：東南アジアの現代美術1980年代から現在まで」に出品されました。
多くの方々に彼の作品を知って頂けますと幸いです。
It is a great honor to introduce Mr. Sopheap Pich to World Art Osaka 2023. Pich’s work has been featured in numerous international museum exhibitions and biennials such as his solo exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2013 and Documenta 13. In 2017, he was featured in the Venice Biennale, Viva Arte Viva and “Sunshower: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now” at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo.
