マハラクシュミ・カンナパンは、木炭を主なメディウムとして用いることで広く知られています。絵画や彫刻といった慣用的な区分けは、彼女の芸術実践の前では意味を持たないかもしれません。液化と固化の間で、作家によるコントロールと非コントロールの間で、木炭は一時的な定着を見せています。歪みやひび割れ、層化などの質感や触感は、ある種の風景を喚起させ、あるいは内的な感覚が物質化したようでもあります。流れ揺らめいていく何かが静止した、あくまで暫定的な瞬間に過ぎないものが、絶対的な必然性をもって鑑賞者に迫ってきます。
Born in Singapore in 1981, lives and works there. Mahalakshmi Kannappan is widely known for her use of charcoal as her primary medium. Conventional divisions such as painting and sculpture might be irrelevant in the face of her artistic practice. Between liquefaction and solidification, between control and uncontrolled by the artist, charcoal is temporarily fixed. The textures and tactile sensations of distortion, cracking, and stratification evoke a kind of landscape, or perhaps the materialization of an internal sentiment. What is only a tentative moment, a stillness of something flowing and shimmering, approaches the viewer with absolute inevitability.
